CREATING A NEW SPACE FOR NEW POSSIBIITIES
By Ghada Begdache
One of the most important principles of feng shui is the principle of inter connectedness It states that our homes reflect us and affect us. In other words, our environment is the mirror of our internal and emotional states, the outer is a reflection of the inner! So when you're living in a cluttered home, what is it saying about you, about your state of mind, about your emotional state???
If you want to create a new future, invite new opportunities in your life, you need to make room for them, create a space for new possibilities, create a breathing space where new things can manifest in your life, clutter makes you feel stuck and tired. So if you want a new love, make room for it, a new career, make room for it, better health, more creativity, more productivity, more clarity, make room for it!! The whole process of organizing and cleaning leads to clarity of thought, the worst feeling of all is that of a clouded mind!
The more you have clutter, the more it drags you down so that it feels as if you are dragging behind you the weight of everything you own! Having too much is a drain on your energy level, people with lots of clutter say they don't have the energy to clear it, they are always tired. Elizabeth Scott, a California based stress management expert says:
"Anyone who has awakened to a messy or unclean house can attest to how it can suck the life out of you. If you live in a messy home it unconsciously makes you think of work that has to be done, it makes you tired! When people feel like they have too much work and they can't escape it, it can contribute to a feeling of depression. In feng shui they talk about the chi' which is the life force energy and clutter drains that out of you"
Clearing your clutter is very therapeutic, because as you're clearing things on the outside, there is a corresponding clearing taking place on the internal level as well. We all know how it feels after finally cleaning our drawers or closets, we feel lighter, happier with a deep feeling of satisfaction, but mostly we feel energized, we got rid of what was weighing us down, all the unwanted, unnecessary stuff that really serves no purpose in our life but that we keep because just in case we might need it some day.
The "just in case" sends a message to the subconscious mind that you are keeping this or that item just in case you can't afford to get one again, a message of poverty consciousness clearly stating that you don't trust the future, you don't trust that life will provide for you what you need, that you feel vulnerable and insecure about tomorrow!
"Let go of the chains of the past and live in the present time and move with the flow" says Karen Kingston, the queen of space clearing.
Here are a few tips to help get your home in tip top shape:
1- Your front entrance: This is what you see first when entering your home, make sure it is clear of any obstructions such as shoes, coats, school bags, newspapers, recycling items, garbage bags etc...If clutter is the first thing you see when walking through the front door, you're already feeling tired and irritable. Because your front entrance is the last thing you see when you leave and the first thing you see when you enter your home, it has a big effect on your mood and on your personal energy level, keep it clear and clean and make sure it is welcoming. The last thing I see when I walk out of my front door are the following words: " open the door to all possibilities" By the way, the front entrance represents your approach to your life journey.
2- Behind doors: Do not hang or store anything behind doors that will prevent them from opening fully and freely, such as bathrobes, clothes, shoe racks...
3- Clutter on the Floor : Do not keep your clutter lying on the floor, specially the closets' floor, it will pull your energy down, store clutter on shelves, get it off the ground until you're ready to deal with it.
4- Under the Bed: Try not store anything under your bed, this is not a storage place, if you absolutely must, make sure it is only items related to your bedroom such as extra blankets, pillows or pyjamas, nothing else.
5- On top of closets, cupboards and bookshelves: Clutter piled up on top of closets, kitchen cupboards or bookshelves create an oppressive feeling as they tower over you as you go about your daily activities in your home. They create a claustrophobic environment.
6- Your Closet Most of us hang on to clothing items because we honestly believe that we'll need them one day or that they will come back into fashion. A client of mine, in her forties now, has kept shoes, dresses, and handbags form her twenties. She absolutely believed that she could wear them again if only she could loose the few extra pounds she had put on. It took a lot of patience and time before she finally agreed that today she is no longer the same person she was twenty years ago, that now she felt differently about herself, about her body image.
She was now a mother of three beautiful children with the curves, the maturity and the beauty of a woman in her 40's. She reluctantly let go of them at first but then understood that all she had to do really, is go out and buy new clothes that flatter her figure and reflect who she is today, not the person she was 20 years ago! What a liberating experience!!
Get large cardboard boxes, label each one of them with today's date then write on them the following:
Things to keep
At the end of the summer, see how many items from the undecided box can now go in the letting go box. As far as your clothes go, if you have not worn a piece of clothing in a whole year, there is very little chance you will wear it again! Let it go! Go for the new colors and the new styles, out with the old, in with the new!!
7- Books: They are hardest thing to let go of for many people, Karen Kingston came up with a brilliant idea, she says keep the ones you absolutely must have and give the rest to your local library, this way whenever you need to refer to them again, you can simply borrow them!
A while ago I helped a clutter - happy friend de clutter her house, she calls me the next day to say she stayed up until late that night because she just could not stop clearing out her stuff, she felt so energized and excited! She had no idea it would feel so good!
8- Photos: Thank God we now download most of our pictures on our computers, Iphones and BBs so that we cancontinually delete the old ones and enjoy the more recent ones! Only keep pictures that make you smile!
9- Kitchen drawers and cupboards: Start with one drawer, don't overwhelm yourself, and follow the same logic as in item #6 Let go of things that just sit there as if they have a claim on that space, things you don't use or are broken, remember your junk is someone else's treasure!
10- Surround yourself with items you love, They will boost your energy, lift your spirits up and put a big smile on your face!
11- More things to clear: Clear your inbox, fix broken things in your home, declutter your car, Karen Kingston suggests that you clear out your flaky friends, your mental clutter, clear any unresolved communications or issues, even clear out your colon!!! Ouch!

THE JOY OF PLAY
Today you may want to indulge your inner child. Perhaps you can play a game with your kids or visit your extended family members. You might also want to simply go out and enjoy the beauty of the world around you. Consider going to a park and swinging on the swings or running barefoot through a sprinkler or along the beach. You may find that the kid in you needs to come out and play every once in a while.
Finding some way to release the kid inside of you can fill your life with more spontaneity and joy. As adults our lives tend to be filled with responsibility and routine. Each day flows into the other and seems exactly like the next. But when we think about when we were children, each day was filled with adventure. While we were playing we were in the moment. We never thought about what would come next, we simply acted spontaneously. Letting ourselves play infuses our lives with this same naturalness that we had as kids. We relinquish our worries and live in wonder of the present moment. By allowing your inner child out today you will discover the richness that play brings to your life.
A Reason to Smile
Five Minutes to Happiness
In the flip of a switch, a thought, we all have the capacity to be happy in this moment.
It can be so easy to get caught up in the rigors of modern life that we tend to forget that happiness need not come with stipulations. Happiness becomes something we must schedule and strive for — a hard-won emotion — and then only when we have no worries to occupy our thoughts. In reality, overwhelming joy is not the exclusive province of those with unlimited time and no troubles to speak of. Many of the happiest people on earth are also those coping with the most serious challenges. They have learned to make time for those simple yet superb pleasures that can be enjoyed quickly and easily. Cultivating a happy heart takes no more than five minutes. The resultant delight will be neither complex nor complicated, but it will be profound and will serve as a reminder that there is always a reason to smile.
So much that is ecstasy-inducing can be accomplished in five minutes. Alone, we can enjoy an aromatic cup of our favorite tea, take a stroll through the garden we have created, write about the day's events in a journal, doodle while daydreaming, or breathe deeply while we listen to the silence around us. In the company of a good friend or treasured relative, we can share a few silly jokes, enjoy a waltz around the room, play a fast-paced hand of cards, or reconnect through lighthearted conversation. The key is to first identify what makes us dizzyingly happy. If we do only what we believe should bring us contentment, our five minutes will not be particularly satisfying. When we allow ourselves the freedom to do whatever brings us pleasure, five minutes out of 14 wakeful hours can brighten our lives immeasurably.
It is often when we have the least free time or energy to devote to joy that we need to unwind and enjoy ourselves the most. Making happiness a priority will help you find five minutes every day to indulge in the things that inspire elation within you. Eventually, your happiness breaks will become an established part of your routine. If you start by pursuing activities you already enjoy and then gradually think up new and different ways to fill your daily five minutes of happiness, you will never be without something to smile about.
